U14 County League Division 2 Semi-Final – 1st May 2012
Laune Rangers: 4-11
Churchill put to the sword as Rangers qualify for the Final.
The last two weeks for our U14’s read like this; played two, won one, lost one – against the same opposition – Churchill.
The lads came through a flat footed performance in the first game – the last round of league fixtures – to produce the performance of the season so far to win the more important of the two meetings – the county Semi-Final!
We travelled to Churchill on Wednesday quietly confident that an improved performance could lead to a positive result & in fairness to the lads they produced an emphatic performance full of skill, energy & no end of courage.
The game started with both sides trading scores before a fine point from Eoin O Sullivan led to Rangers taking a firm grip on matters, further 1st half scores from Cian O Shea, Eoin Evans, Darragh O Connor, Fiachra Clifford & Daire Cleary gave rangers a 2-09 to 0-03 half time lead. Credit must be given to the Rangers defence for keeping a dangerous team like Churchill to 0-03 in the 1st half.
An early Rangers goal by the impressive Eoin Evans kept the pressure on but as was expected Churchill mounted a fight back in the 2nd half, after all this was the team who topped the standings after the last round of the league fixtures. Three quick fire Churchill goals were split by what proved to be decisive scores from Daire Cleary ( goal ) & Fiachra Clifford ( point) to leave rangers leading by 4 – 11 to 3-05 with 10 minutes remaining.
At this stage Churchill were laying siege on the Rangers goal, however, Kevin Fitzpatrick at Full back was immense, he broke up attack after attack & ably helped by the rest of the defence they kept the attacks at bay for the most part. Churchill added 2 goals deep in injury time to make for an exciting finish but Rangers held firm to record a fantastic victory. Those late goals clouded the fact that Rangers were by far the better team on the night & fully deserved their win.
This U14 team has improved hugely over the league campaign & in spells have produced scintillating football, they march on now to the county final next Wednesday against Glenflesk & a repeat of the semi-final performance will be required against a Glenflesk team that beat us in the opening fixture in the league.
