Laune Rangers 2-2
The Laune Rangers u14 side were at the wrong end of a heavy defeat on Monday evening last on a miserable night for football. Ardfert provided the opposition in this round of the central district and looked every inch the division 1 side with slick passing and well taken scores highlighting their credentials.
The opening exchanges saw both sides trade scores with full forward Keelin Houlihan striking for a well taken score from play after some good movement by the wing forward line. The visitors started to get a foot hold around the field and this led to a sustained period of pressure in which they continued to win primary possession allowing them scoring opportunities which had the home side on the back foot. This early dominance and relentless attack was rewarded with 5 unanswered points and a well taken goal which saw the Ardfert side race into an early lead. The Laune Rangers side managed to stifle some attacking play and build from the back and quick, long ball was starting to cause problems in the Ardfert defence. The size and speed of Keelin Houlihan was again to the fore and saw him notch up 2 goals before the end of the half.
The half time break allowed the home side a chance to regroup and at the whistle the score line read Laune Rangers 2-1 and Ardfert 1-9.
The half time team talk managed to rally the Laune Rangers side who gave a better account of themselves after a rusty first half where their performance was more Jekyll than Hyde and a well worked Laune Rangers attack won a free which the home side duly dispatched to give a glimmer of light to the Laune Rangers side at the start of this new half. The Ardfert men responded and began to pose further problems with their man marking tactics and tight defence starting to pay dividends in stifling any attacking opportunities that the home side were creating. Laune Rangers made substitutions to try and turn the half around but the introduction of Cian and Dara Shea wasn’t able to stem the threat posed by the Ardfert side. Points converted from frees started to take their toll on the score line and with the home sides defensive lines being tested throughout by strong running forwards and accurate passing the visitors started to pull away from the Laune Rangers side. A 3rd goal conceded late in the game was the final nail and the end result saw the Ardfert side win on a score line of 3-18 to 2-2.
Best on the night for Laune Rangers in testing conditions were full forward Keelin Houlihan and corner back Dylan Costello and Captain Neil O Brien.
