Listowel Emmets: 2-06

Laune Rangers hosted Listowel Emmets in the County Minor League in J.P. O’Sullivan Park on Friday evening last.  The home team started much stronger and took an early lead.

Gavin O’Shea and Jack O’Connor slotted points for Rangers before Dylan Costello scored his team’s first goal.  Gavin O’Shea then added his 2nd point to put Laune Rangers into a 1-03 to 0-00 lead after 12 minutes.

Listowel then found their feet though, and found their opening score in the 16th minute from David Keane.  This was swiftly followed by a great individual score from their wing back Jake Moriarty who brought the ball forward from his own half back line to knock it over the bar.  Rangers’ John O’Shea pointed to put his side 5 points ahead, before Emmets scored their first goal right on the half time whistle.  A 45m kick dropped short into the Rangers square and David Keane popped up to hit the net for his side.  The teams went in to the break on a scoreline of 1-04 to 1-02 in favour of Laune Rangers

Emmets opened up the second half as strongly as they finished the first.  Their midfielder Cormac Mulvihill slotted a fine point from a 45 and brought the lead down to a point, before John O’shea restored the 2 point cushion for Killorglin.  That lead lasted all of three minutes though, as first Sean Gilbert and then Cormac Mulvihill again scored for Listowel to tie the game up at 1-05 to 1-05 on 40 mins.  Laune Rangers then found some momentum as Gavin O’Shea finished a fine team move with a point before they scored their 2nd goal of the game.  Liam Quirke punched the ball home from the edge of the square after Aaron Gamble found him with a great fist-pass.  Laune Rangers led by four points with 6 minutes remaining but Listowel refused to give up.  Flying wing back Jake Moriarty again took the ball on a great solo run and set up Rici Hanley who found the back of the net with a great strike.  This was quickly followed by the equalizing score.  Again it was midfielder Cormac Mulvihill who struck a long range point to tie the game up and that is how it stayed to the finish.  Final score from JP O’Sullivan Park: Laune Rangers: 2-06 to 2-06 Listowel Emmets.

Players that stood out for the home team:  Aaron Gamble’s performed his defensive duties to huge effect in the first half and was at the heart of all his team’s attacks in the second.  Midfielder Jack O’Connor was strong at midfield and provided some great support to his forwards.

For Listowel: Wing back Jake Moriarty was outstanding, proving to be his team’s playmaker, while Cormac Moriarty came up with some big scores that proved crucial to earning the point for his team.
