Laune Rangers 3-9, Na Gaeil 5-7The County Under 16 League got underway on Wednesday evening last, and Laune Rangers opened their campaign with a home tie against Na Gaeil. The visitors got off to a dream start when, after just 20 seconds, the ball was in the Rangers net as Dara Devine finished a move that began directly from the throw in. The remainder of the opening quarter didn’t inprove matters for the home side as Aaron Dewy followed up a well taken point by punching the ball into the net for Na Gaeil’s second goal. Two Darragh O’Sullivan points from 45s as well as a Cian O’Shea free dampened the flames of the Na Gaeil attack and the score after 15 minutes had Rangers trailing Na Gaeil by 0-3 to 2-1. Aaron Dewy and Fergal Barry pointed next for the Tralee side before the third Na Gaeil goal was netted by Dara Devine. However, Rangers responded with a goal of their own through Daragh O’Connor & followed it up with a Patrick Carey brace to reduce the gap to 4 points as first half additional time approached. Na Gaeil added an extra two points before the short whistle through Ryan O’Neill & Dara Devine (free) to make the score at half time:- Laune Rangers 1-5, Na Gaeil 3-5.
A touch of déjà vu came upon the teams as the second half began, as the visitors struck for an early goal yet again – this time Niall O’Mahony nestling the ball to the net. Rangers responded well though, and points from Cian O’Shea & Patrick Carey were added to a goal by Cian O’Shea to reduce to deficit to 4 points with 15 minutes to play, as Laune Rangers trailed by 2-7 to 4-5. Diarmuid O’Connor netted Na Gaeil’s 5th goal of the evening to stop the Rangers comeback in its tracks, but Rangers rallied and & Darragh O’Sullivan goal, as well as points from Cian O’Shea and Daragh O’Connor brought the Killorglin side back to within two points of the leaders – the closest the score had been since the first minute. However, Na Gaeil closed out the game with two points through Diarmuid O’Connor and Dara Devine to secure the league points in a hotly contested game.
