Beaufort 1-13, Laune Rangers 2-11

In the final game of the club’s season, Laune Rangers have retained the Mid Kerry Under 16 title for a 5th successive year with a victory in this year’s Final against Beaufort, which was played in Coughlan Park, Beaufort on Sunday afternoon.

The home side got off to a bright start, pointing 4 times at the beginning of the game. as Mikey Moriarty (2) & All Ireland Minor winner Jack O’Connor (2, 1 ’45) scored for Beaufort before Gearóid Hassett scored Rangers’ first point of the game. With 15 minutes played, the Beaufort led by 0-4 to 0-1.

Rangers were level by the 16th minute, though. Gearóid Hassett collected the ball 40 yards out and beat two markers before slotting it under the goalkeeper for the game’s first goal. A second goal came a few short minutes later, as Hassett again beat a number of defenders before being hauled down inside the square – Callum Russell making no mistake with the spot kick. Matt Leslie (free), Callum Russell & Jack Healy all added well taken points late on, while Jack O’Connor notched the last score of the half with a pointed free for Beaufort, although they may have had more but for a great save by Rangers goalkeeper Cian Naylor from Beaufort’s Sean O’Brien. Half Time Score:- Beaufort 0-5, Laune Rangers 2-4.

Gearóid Hassett continued to cause trouble to the Beaufort backs right from the restart, as he picked up a breaking ball from deep and ran at the heart of the defence, eventually being fouled for a free that was converted by Matt Leslie. Jack Healy scored an excellent point to extend the lead for Rangers while the sides matched point-for-point for the remainder of the third quarter – Jack O’Connor (free), Kieran Dennehy & Simon Coffey pointing for the home side while Matt Leslie (3, 1 free) was unerring to keep the visitors ahead. With 15 minutes to play, Laune Rangers led by 2-9 to 0-8.

Beaufort were awarded a penalty in the 46th minute as Matt Reenstierna was adjudged to have fouled the attacking player in the square. Jack O’Leary converted the penalty to the net to bring Beaufort to within four points.

Matt Leslie twice (1 free) cancelled out Beaufort points from Mikey Moriarty and Seán O’Brien to maintain the lead but the momentum was favouring the home side, & the gap was soon halved as Jack O’Connor kicked two long range frees. O’Connor kicked his first point from play to leave the minimum between the sides but Rangers held on to win the game. Full Time Score:- Beaufort 1-13, Laune Rangers 2-11.

A huge defensive effort in the final stages was crucial to stop the completion of a comeback by the home side, and it took a huge team effort to win this game. At the back, Matt Reenstierna and Cathal Crowley both put in big shifts, while the half back line and midfield played great football to quickly turn defence into attack. The midfield pairing of Rory O’Connor & Calum Moriarty along with Callum Russell covered the field, linking backs and forwards with great effect.

In attack, Matt Leslie finished with a tally of seven points (two from play), while Gearóid Hassett caused havoc in attack. He was fouled time and again to create scores for his side, while his cutting runs in the first half ended in both Rangers goals – scoring the first himself before being chopped down for the penalty 2nd goal.

After the game, Mid Kerry Bord na nÓg Chairman Tim Coffey presented the Mid Kerry Under 16 Cup to Laune Rangers captain Gearóid Hassett.
