Laune Rangers are County Féile Champions 2018

Laune Rangers will represent Kerry in Féile Peil na nÓg 2018 following victory in the County Finals this afternoon in Connolly Park, Tralee. They were pushed all the way in both the Semi Final and Final by Ballymacelligott and Glenflesk respectively, but dug deep on both occasions to claim a County title.

SEMI FINAL:- Laune Rangers 4-8, Ballymacelligott 2-6

Rangers led their Semi Final by five points at Half Time at 2-4 to 1-2, but Ballymac rallied early in the second half and led at the three-quarter mark, having scored 1-4 unanswered. However, Rangers came back and held Ballymac scoreless for the remainder of the game, which they scored another 2-4 of their own to make sure of the win. Full Time Score:- Laune Rangers 4-8, Ballymacelligott 2-6. Scorers for Rangers were:- Darragh O’Grady 1-2, Darragh Evans 1-0, Cillian Foley 1-0, Adam Owens 1-0, Eoghan Hassett (0-4, 3f), Jack O’Sullivan (0-2).

FINAL:- Laune Rangers 5-8, Glenflesk 3-4

Laune Rangers had the benefit of the breeze for the first half of the Final & made full use of it to lead by 2-6 to 0-3 at the break – Adam Owens netting twice in the first five minutes, with Jack O’Sullivan (2, 1 free), Darragh O’Grady (3) & Owens adding points in the 15 minute period.

Rangers were put under pressure for the second half, but the defence stood up to answer every question asked of them. The Rangers got off to the perfect start against the breeze, scoring a goal in the first play of the second half, but Glenflesk replied with a goal of their own very shortly afterwards. However, Rangers got up field again to score a fourth goal through Cillian Foley. Glenflesk began to dominate the possession for much of the remainder of the game, and they scored two goals and a point to reduce the gap between the sides to six points. Rangers were not going to be denied on the day though, and a fifth goal was to come for Rangers through Jack Lynch, before Eoghan Hassett pointed a free for the competition’s final score. Full Time:- Laune Rangers 5-8, Glenflesk 3-4.

Laune Rangers were fantastic on the day, with Jack O’Sullivan & Ryan Diggin a driving force and Adam Owens, Cillian Foley & Darragh O’Grady clinical in their scoring. The stand out player over the two games was Rangers wing back Ciarán O’Sullivan who, along with full back Aona O’Shea, drove their team out of danger at the back at crucial times. Well done to the coaches, Billy O’Sullivan, Diarmuid O’Sullivan, Mike Frank Russell and John O’Dwyer who had their charges in great condition.

Having lost the three previous Féile County Finals, the class of 2018 finally bring Laune Rangers to the national stage to represent Kerry in Féile Peil na nÓg, which will take place in Down, Louth and Meath in the last weekend of June.
