Heartbreak in County League Finals for Rangers.

Division One:- Laune Rangers 2-16, Glenflesk 5-9

Laune Rangers came up short in their attempt to win a first County Under 14 Division 1 title in 14 years for the club on Wednesday evening as Glenflesk came out on top in the Final played in Fitzgerald stadium.

Laune Rangers started brightly and led by 1-6 to 0-2 after fifteen minutes, with Jack O’Sullivan (3, 2 frees), Eoghan Hassett, Ryan Diggin and John Burke all pointed while Hassett netted an excellent goal. Dylan Roche and Sean Guerin (free) pointed for Glenflesk in the same period.

Glenflesk got back into the game in the 16th minute, as they got their first goal – an effort at a point rebounding high on the upright and dropping to Dylan Roche who found the net. Both sides missed chances in the second quarter, but Rangers – through Eoghan Hassett (free), Jack O’Sullivan (2) and Darragh O’Grady – added four points to Glenflesk’s three to take a five point lead into the break. Half Time Score:- Laune Rangers 1-10, Glenflesk 1-5.

A Luke Crowley goal for Glenflesk was sandwiched between two Jack O’Sullivan points for Rangers early in the half, but the winning of the game came between the 38th and 43rd minute as Dyland Roche & substitute Ignatius O’Leary (2) scored three goals to give Glenflesk a commanding lead on the three-quarter mark. Roche and Darragh O’Connor pointed for Glenflesk while Jack O’Sullivan added to his tally for Rangers to leave the Sliabh Luachra men leading by 5-8 to 1-13 with 15 minutes to play.

Dylan Roche got Glenflesk’s final score of the game in the 46th minute, as Rangers set about trying to claw back an eight point deficit. A 54th minute goal by Darragh O’Grady along with points by O’Grady & Eoghan Hassett left Rangers needing a goal to level the game with five minutes to play. However, they missed a number of chances – the setting sun at the Hospital end of the ground possibly causing an issue – and a late shot by Jack O’Sullivan flashed just over the crossbar. The equalizing score was not to come for Rangers, and Glenflesk held on to take the County Under 14 Division 1 title.

It was an exciting game as the two best sides at the age-group in the county – they drew in the League stage in Barraduff with both teams beating everyone else and Rangers defeated Glenflesk in the County Féile Final – were separated by a kick of a ball at the final whistle. Laune Rangers were slightly below par on the night and were beaten by a hungrier Glenflesk side who made an inspired second half substitution in double goal scorer Ignatius O’Leary. Dylan Roche was excellent on the night, showing signs that he will follow older brothers Darragh & Ian & have a great career in the blue and gold and maybe beyond.

For Rangers, Jack O’Sullivan was the main scoring threat, scoring nine points (six from play). Ryan Diggin was fantastic at midfield, while corner backs Cathal O’Callaghan and particularly Tim Mangan had outstanding games.

Rangers now switch focus to Féile Peile na nÓg and a trip to County Down in just five weeks time.

Laune Rangers:- Adam Carey, Tim Mangan, Aona O’Shea, Cathal O’Callaghan, Killian Spillane, Tom Whittleton, Ciarán O’Sullivan, Adam Owens, Ryan Diggin (0-1), Darragh O’Grady (1-2), Eoghan Hassett (1-3, 1f), John Tuohy, John Burke (0-1), Cillian Foley, Jack O’Sullivan (0-9, 3f).  Subs: Eoin Lynch, Joseph Cronin Langham

Division Nine:- Laune Rangers 5-11, Dr Crokes 5-14

A fantastic performance from the Laune Rangers Development team brought them to within touching distance of a County Division Nine title but a strong Dr Crokes outfit, bolstered by the addition of a number of their Division 1 side, just came out on top by a three point margin.

As Rangers were also contesting the Division 1 Final, Laune Rangers made do without a couple of eligible players that were filling in for injuries in the later game. That being said, those that took the field for Rangers gave their all.

Dr Crokes led by 2-2 to 1-3 after 15 minutes, as Joe Cronin Langham finished a fine team move with an excellent goal while OIsin Lynch (free) and Eoin Joy (2). Crokes went on the ascendancy in the second quarter, adding a third goal and four more points, while a second Joe Cronin Langham goal along with an Oisin Lynch point saw Rangers heading in at the break trailing by five points. Half Time Score:- Laune Rangers 2-4, Dr Crokes 3-6.

Dr Crokes added another 1-2 in the early minutes of the second half to double their lead, while they responded to goals (Oisin Lynch and Cillian Buckley) and points (Lynch (2) and Colin Griffin with a further 1-2 to hold a 5-10 to 4-7 with 15 minutes to play.

Rangers put in a mammoth effort in the final quarter in attempt to catch Crokes, but they added four important points that would eventually prove the difference. Rangers scored a fifth goal through Joseph O’Neill and pointed through Oisin Lynch, Darragh Evans and Jamie Healy (2). However, Crokes kept their noses ahead to take the County Division Nine title. Full Time Score:- Laune Rangers 5-11, Dr Crokes 5-14.

Colin Griffin led by example as the captain had a great game at wing back for Rangers. Oisin Lynch was excellent at full forward, while the Under 12 players that were called up as cover all got game time, with Niall Tadhg O’Brien particular in his very first game at the age grade for Rangers.
