Under 16s win in Central Region Division 1

Na Gaeil 1-7, Laune Rangers 1-11

Laune Rangers picked up their first win of the season with an away victory over Na Gaeil in Killeen, Tralee on Monday evening.

The home side hit the ground running from the beginning, and led by 0-4 to 0-1 after fifteen minutes with a Gearoid Hassett free all that Rangers had to show for their first quarter. Na Gaeil had the majority of possession for the remainder of the half, but couldn’t convert their advantage in play to scores, due to some astute defending by the Rangers backs. Gearoid Hassett added another free for Rangers, but Na Gaeil slotted two more points (1 free) before the break. Half Time Score:- Na Gaeil 0-6, Laune Rangers 0-2.

Laune Rangers were a different side in the second half. Points from Jack Healy (2) and Matthew Leslie had the visitors back to within a point, but a goal against the run of play for Na Gaeil nullified Rangers’ second half scores – a 45’ dropping into the square as the setting sun caught the Rangers defence blindsighted and the ball clipped the underside of the bar before hitting the net. Gearoid Hassett and Matthew Leslie both pointed to halve the deficit – the latter’s point particularly excellent from long range – before a 46th minute Laune Rangers goal gave them the lead for the first time. Sean Cleary broke out from defence on a superb run up the right flank before passing to Mikey O’Donnell who made no mistake in hitting the bottom corner of the goal. This left Rangers leading by 1-7 to 1-6 with a quarter to play.

Gearoid Hassett added two more points (1 free) to extend Rangers lead before another well taken Matt Leslie point put four between the sides. Na Gaeil had their share of possession but the Rangers defence cut out the chances time and again. Na Gaeil managed a slot a free to leave a goal between the sides, but when Rangers got upfield on another attack and drew a foul, Gearoid Hassett converted the free with the final kick of the game. Full Time Score:- Na Gaeil 1-7, Laune Rangers 1-11.

The centre of Rangers’ defence was solid on the night with Matt Reenstierna and Darragh Mangan aided by their wide men especially Sean Cleary. Rory O’Connor & Calum Moriarty edged the midfield battle while the forwards were economical with their chances with Jack Healy & Gearoid Hassett capitalizing, while the stand out player on the night was Matthew Leslie who was dangerous in attack and solid in covering defence.

Laune Rangers Team:- Jake Reenstierna, Patrick Brennan, Matt Reenstierna, Niall Fenton Toms, Sean Cleary, Darragh Mangan, James Byrne, Calum Moriarty, Rory O’Connor, Calum Russell, Matthew Leslie (0-3), Mikey O’Donnell (1-0), Jack Healy (0-2), Gearoid Hassett (0-6, 4f), Marc Clifford.
