Laune Rangers 3-13, Kerins O’Rahillys 2-10

Laune Rangers ‘Blue’ claimed the Central Region Under 14 Division One title on Wednesday evening, adding to the Division Four title that was won a few weeks earlier by the ‘White’ team.

Laune Rangers got off to a great start, and were five points ahead in as many minutes following scores from Eoghan Hassett (3, 1 free), Jack O’Sullivan and Adam Owens. Adam Carey pulled off a great point blank save in the Rangers goal to maintain the lead but a Danny Hennessy free followed by a goal for Rahillys through Ben O’Brien left just a point between the sides after 8 minutes. Jack O’Sullivan pointed a free for Rangers before Eoghan Hassett hit the net with a wonderful finish to restore the five point lead. Darragh O’Connor added a point for Rahillys which meant that with a quarter played, Laune Rangers led by 1-6 to 1-2.

Eoghan Hassett and Jack O’Sullivan points for Rangers were cancelled out by Ben O’Brien and Danny Hennessy points, but the gap could have been closed further but for another Adam Carey save. Laune Rangers finished the half strongly as John Burke hit the net for a second Rangers goal, which began at the back from a fantastic interception by Tim Mangan. Half Time Score:- Laune Rangers 2-8, Kerins O’Rahillys 1-4.

Eoghan Hassett struck the net for a fantastic goal in the first minute of the second half and added a point shortly afterwards to cap an excellent team move and increase Rangers lead to 11 points. However, Kerin’s O’Rahillys rallied and had their best period of play in the third quarter. Ben O’Brien, Jack Savage, Danny Hennessy and Darragh O’Connor all pointed and Thomas Kennedy scored a goal to cut the deficit, and with a quarter to play, Laune Rangers led by 3-9 to 2-8.

Laune Rangers shored up the defence in the final quarter, with Eoin Lynch, Tim Mangan and Ciarán O’Sullivan impressing at the back with defensive structure holding up well. Eoghan Hassett (2), Adam Owens & Darragh O’Grady added points to make sure of the win. Rahillys added on two late points through Danny Hennessy (free) and Sean Healy but time ran out for the Tralee side. Full Time Score:- Laune Rangers 3-13, Kerins O’Rahillys 2-10.

Kerins O’Rahillys battled on throughout to stay in touch with Rangers. Their midfield pairing of Jack Savage, Seán Healy along with forwards Danny Hennessy and Ben O’Brien stood out for the Strand Road side.

For Rangers, Ciarán O’Sullivan was outstanding at centre-back while captain Tom Whittleton led by example with an industrious performance. With Adam Carey doing very well as the last line of defence, the stand out player was the exemplary Eoghan Hassett who finished with a total of 2-7, with 2-5 of that coming from play.
