Na Gaeil 0-7, Laune Rangers 5-16
Laune Rangers Under 16s picked up their third consecutive win in the Central Region League Division One with a defeat of Na Gaeil on Monday evening. Na Gaeil’s home pitch in Killeen was unplayable on the day, so the game took place at the nearby Caherslee pitch.
Laune Rangers got off to a great start and took a four point lead in the opening eight minutes with scores from Stephen Sealey, Gabriel Griffin, Eoin Clifford and Gearoid Hassett after some excellent team play throughout the team. Na Gaeil got off the mark with a point before Rangers scored their first goal as Gearoid Hassett put the finishing touch to a sweeping move that began at the back with some great passing from David Mangan and Shane Doona. Na Gaeil pointed again to see Rangers lead by 1-4 to 0-2 with 15 minutes played.
Laune Rangers extended their lead in the 2nd quarter as points from Gearoid Hassett, Shane Doona (free) & Matt Leslie were followed by Hassett’s second goal, as some great work by Sean Cleary stopped the Na Gaeil backs from relieving pressure. Na Gaeil added three points late in the half (1 free) before the short whistle was blown and the sides made for the shelter of the dressing rooms with the score at Half Time:- Na Gaeil 0-5, Laune Rangers 2-7.
Laune Rangers dominated the third quarter as Na Gaeil’s attempts at goal were either thwarted by the Rangers defence or by the wind that dragged their shots wide to register a solitary point. Rangers had no such problems at the other end though, as James Hurley & David Mangan added points to solid performances from centre back & midfield respectively before Roan Moriarty capitalized on a skewed kickout to chip the retreating goalkeeper for the visitors’ third goal. Shane Doona pointed another free before the Na Gaeil goalkeeper made up for his earlier error by pulling off a point blank save to deny Gearoid Hassett a hat-trick. With 15 minutes to play, Rangers led by 3-11 to 0-6.
Laune Rangers did not let up in the final stages, and pointed frees from Shane Doona and Roan Moriarty were followed by a 4th goal, as David Mangan got his fist to a Roan Moriarty pass to send it to the net. Na Gaeil added their final point of the game as they continued to struggle for accuracy, while Rangers added further points from Shane Doona (free), Gabe Griffin and Stephen Sealey were added to by a 5th goal through Roan Moriarty to see Rangers remain top of the Central Region Division One.
