An Ghaeltacht 1-10, Laune Rangers 5-10
Laune Rangers Under 16s defeated An Ghaeltacht on Monday on a sunny but cold evening alongside the strand in Gallarus, in Round Two of the Central Region Division 1.
Little separated the sides in the opening quarter and with 20 minutes played, the sides were leved at 0-2 each, as Roan Moriarty & Shane Doona pointed for Rangers with some stout defending from Cormac Doyle, Rory O’Connor and James Hurley keeping the home side at bay. Laune Rangers dominated the remainder of the opening half though, as Shane Doona pointed a free followed by Laune Rangers first goal – a Shane Doona shot struck the top of the post & fell in front of goal, with Roan Moriarty quickest to react & finishing well.
Moriarty went on to complete a quickfire hat-trick with his second goal in particular coming after some good pressing by Conor Burke winning the ball with Matt Leslie and then Shane Doona feeding the full forward who finished well. Midfielders David Mangan and Gabriel Griffin now had the upper hand and continued to keep the pressure on the Ghaeltacht defence. This pressure saw points from Shane Doona (3, 2 frees), Matthew Leslie & Gabriel Griffin before half time as An Ghaeltacht could only engineer a single point in the same period before the break. The Half Time score:- An Ghaeltacht 0-3, Laune Rangers 3-8.
Gabriel Griffin added to Laune Rangers tally with an early second half point, but An Ghaeltacht showed great resolve & pointed twice (1 free) as they pressured the Rangers defence. Laune Rangers didn’t sit back though, and a 4th goal was soon to come as Conor Burke finished well after a great build up from the back involving most of the outfield. With 15 minutes to play, Laune Rangers led by 4-9 to 0-5.
An Ghaeltacht kept their heads up and pointed three points midway through the half, with an excellent 45 kicked in a swirling breeze the highlight of those. A sweetly struck point from Eoin Clifford for Rangers was cancelled out by another Ghaeltacht free. An Ghaeltacht hit the net themselves to eat into the deficit, but it wasn’t to last as Rangers struck a 5th and final goal through substitute Stephen Sealey. A final point from the home side with the last kick of the game saw the final whistle blown with the score at Full Time:- An Ghaeltacht 1-10, Laune Rangers 5-10.
In all, this was an excellent away result by Rangers, who were able to make five substitutions without diminishing the performance.
