The Laune Rangers & Kilcullen Féile Teams before they played Saturday morning's Group Game in Killorglin

Féile Peile na nÓg:- Na Cailíni

DAY ONE: Friday June 24th

The four teams in Division Two Group D travelled to Glenbeigh on Friday, June 24th for the opening games in Féile 2016.

Game One saw a local derby between Laune Rangers and Milltown/Listry. Milltown/ Listry led by the minimum at half time at 0-3 to 0-2. A goal for Milltown/Listry in the second half secured their win. Final score: Laune Rangers 0-4, Milltown/Listry 1-4.

Game Two was played between Kilcullen of Kildare and St Rynaghs of Offaly. A good start for Kilcullen saw them lead by 2-1 to 0-2 at the break. While St Rynaghs played better in the second half and indeed scored a goal for their efforts, Kilcullen proved good enough and goaled again themselves to secure the win. Final score:- Kilcullen 3-3, St Rynaghs 1-3.

Kilcullen stayed out on the field for Game Three and faced Milltown/Listry. Kilcullen were the stronger side from the outset and having led at Half Time by 5-4 to 1-1, the Kildare side won comfortably despite being outscored in the second half. Final Score:- Kilcullen 5-7, Milltown/Listry 2-3.

The Final game of the evening in Glenbeigh was played between Laune Rangers and St Rynaghs. Carrying a 0-6 to 0-2 lead into the second half, Laune Rangers pushed on after the break and scored 2-4 in the second half to put it beyond doubt. Final Score:- Laune Rangers 2-10, St Rynaghs 1-3.

DAY TWO: Saturday June 25th

Day Two of Féile 2016 saw Laune Rangers play the team they hosted for the weekend – Kilcullen of Kildare.

Having won one of their two opening games, Laune Rangers still had Cup aspirations, although their opponents Kilcullen had won both of their opening games comfortably. The sides were level at the break at 2-3 each, with a brace of Maggie West goals the result of an excellent first half display from the team. Kilcullen scored their third goal almost immediately from the restart and they stayed ahead until the end. Full time score:- Laune Rangers 2-6, Kilcullen 3-7. Scorers for Rangers:- Maggie West (2-0), Hannah McGeever (0-2), Andrea Nolan (0-2), Rachael Evans (0-1), Alanna Dolan (0-1).

The result, along with Milltown/Listry’s draw with St Rynaghs, meant that Laune Rangers and the Offaly side would go to the Shield Quarter Final, while Milltown/Listry would join an undefeated Kilcullen in the Cup Quarter Finals.

Laune Rangers then travelled to Farranfore to face Castleisland Desmonds in the Division Two Shield Semi Final. The first point of the game wasn’t scored until the 9th minute and it was Laune Rangers who took the lead. It was a lead that would not be handed over, as they led at Half Time by 0-4 to 0-1. Rangers pushed on in the second half and another Maggie West brace of goals (both great team goals) ensured that Laune Rangers would progress. Full Time score:- Laune Rangers 2-6, Castleisland Desmonds 1-3.  Scorers for Rangers: Maggie West (2-2), Fodhla Houlihan (0-1), Alanna Dolan (0-1), Hannah McGeever (0-1), Nessa Healy (0-1).

Laune Rangers would progress to play St Rynaghs – a team that they defeated in the Group Stage – in the Division Two Semi Final in Connelly Park on Sunday morning.

DAY THREE: Sunday June 26th

Another early start was needed on Sunday morning as Laune Rangers travelled to Connelly Park, Tralee for a 10:30am Semi Final against St Rynaghs.

After going behind to an early goal, Rangers responded well & a Maggie West goal put Rangers in front. They would hold the lead until the break as the sides went to towards their dugouts with a Half Time score: Laune Rangers 1-4, St Rynaghs 1-1. A low scoring second half saw Rangers outscoring the Offaly side by two points to one, and Laune Rangers would go on to win in the end on a Final Score:- Laune Rangers 1-6, St Rynaghs 1-2. Scorers for Rangers: Maggie West (1-1), Andrea Nolan (0-2), Fodhla Houlihan (0-2), Rachael Evans (0-1).

Laune Rangers then travelled to Austin Stack Park to play Fethard in the Division Two Shield Final.

Having played into a stiff breeze in the first half, Laune Rangers trailed by a point (1-2 to 0-4) at Half Time, with points from Maggie West (0-2), Rachael Evans & Nessa Healy. Having missed a penalty and kicked an number of wides in the second half, 3 Maggie West points got Rangers noses in front to lead by 0-7 to 1-3 with time running out. However, a fortunate Fethard goal with virtually the last kick of the game broke Laune Rangers hearts as the Tipperary side snuck the win. Final score Laune Rangers 0-7, Fethard 2-3.

Ultimately, there would be disappointment for Rangers in the end but the Squad put in a huge effort over 6 games in three days. Hopefully the disappointment will fade but the memories created over the weekend will linger. A huge squad effort produced a great performance from every player. County panelists Rachael Evans, Fodhla Houlihan (Rangers captain), & Andrea Nolan were always looking to take on responsibility while Claire Fealey was a rock at full back. Maggie West was clinical at full forward, with goals at crucial times throughout, and Hannah McGeever & Orla Dunphy turned over possession on their opposition time and again.

Meanwhile, our friends from Kilcullen made it all the way to the Division Two Cup Final, but fell at the final hurdle when they were defeated by Cavan’s Killygarry on a scoreline of 2-4 to 1-3.
