They defeat John Mitchels for their 2nd win of the season.
Laune Rangers 4-14, John Mitchels 1-10
Laune Rangers Under 16s hosted John Mitchels in Cloon on Monday evening in Round 3 of the Central League Division One.
The sides were closely matched in the opening stages with Laune Rangers leading by 0-3 to 0-2 after 10 minutes, as Dáire Cleary, Roan Moriarty and Shane Doona pointed for the home side. Following a couple of wides by Mitchels, Laune Rangers opened up a four point lead with a Roan Moriarty goal – Mark O’Connor unselfishly fist passing the ball across the square when he had the opportunity to score himself, and Moriarty punched the ball to the net. Moriarty added a point before John Mitchels replied with two points of their own to leave Rangers leading by 1-4 to 0-4 with a quarter played.
Laune Rangers defence sustained significant pressure throughout, with Oisin Daly in particular putting in a huge effort – twice diving at the feet of his marker to block a sure score. Daragh O’Connor pointed for Rangers, before Dáire Cleary got on the end of a great Mark O’Connor pass to score his team’s second goal. Further points from Dáire Cleary, Mark O’Connor, Roan Moriarty and Jack Evans would be added before the short whistle to give Laune Rangers a commanding lead at the break. Half Time Score: Laune Rangers 2-9, John Mitchels 0-4.
Laune Rangers reshuffled the deck at half time, making a number of personnel and positional switches mainly in defence. This created some parity between the sides in the early part of the second half, with John Mitchels outscoring Rangers by 0-4 to 0-3 in the 3rd quarter to leave Rangers leading by 2-12 to 0-8 with 15 minutes to play, with Mark O’Connor, Daragh O’Connor and Roan Moriarty slotting the points for the hosts. Another Mitchels point was followed up by a goal for the visitors to leave just 6 points between the sides with 10 minutes left, but Laune Rangers new-look defence then settled and allowed just one more point before the end of the game – Conor Murphy leading from the back with a commanding presence at full back.
Laune Rangers third goal came from Shane Doona – Dáire Cleary with a mazy run through the heart of the defence, drawing in defenders and passing to Doona who calmly finished to the net. Cleary pointed again before Rangers’ fourth goal – substitute Gabriel Griffin getting in on the scoring with a well taken finish. Daragh O’Connor notched the final point of the evening before the final whistle went on a comfortable win for Laune Rangers. Final score:- Laune Rangers 4-14, John Mitchels 1-10.
A good effort all round for Rangers players, especially when tested in the second half after making numerous changes. Oisin Daly put in an excellent first half before his withdrawal at the break, while Daragh O’Connor was energetic throughout and contributed greatly both defensively & on attack. While Dáire Cleary was excellent in taking & creating scores, Conor Murphy stood out in leading the reshuffled back line in the second half, with some great runs outfield.
