U16s defeat Legion in County League

Laune Rangers 4-15, Killarney Legion 1-11

Laune Rangers Under 16s opened their County League campaign on Sunday evening with a comfortable home win against Killarney Legion.

A Dáire Cleary free opened the scoring for Rangers in the first minute, but Legion would dominate the opening quarter. Three points from Mark O’Connor (1 free) saw Laune Rangers trail by 0-7 to 0-4 after fifteen minutes. Laune Rangers responded well in the second quarter, and points by Shane Doona, Dáire Cleary & Eoin Evan drew the home side level. A Legion goal put the visitors back in front, but Dáire Cleary finished a fine move to the net to level the game again before the break. The Half Time Score:- Laune Rangers 1-7, Killarney Legion 1-7.

Legion pointed twice (1 free) at the start of the second half, but Laune Rangers took control from there on. Two excellent goals from Shane Doona, as well as points from Daragh O’Connor, Mark O’Connor, Dáire Cleary and Doona himself saw Laune Rangers lead by 3-11 to 1-9 with fifteen minutes to play.

Legion saw three black cards in the final quarter as they lost their discipline, and Laune Rangers closed the game out with relative comfort. Eoin Evans scored a 4th goal for the home side after finding space in the square. Further points were added by Shane Doona (2) & Mark O’Connor (2, 1f) while Legion tagged on two points before the final whistle. Full Time score:- Laune Rangers 4-15, Killarney Legion 1-11.

A fine display for Laune Rangers saw a number of stand-out performances. Conor Murphy marshaled the team well from full back, while Eoin O’Sullivan was excellent at midfield. Meanwhile, 5 of the starting forwards scored, with great performances from all. Mark O’Connor was excellent in both scoretaking and link-up play, but it was the youngest player Shane Doona – whose brother Kieran played well for the Senior side earlier in the day – stood out, scoring 2-4 while also assisting and linking up well.
