Laune Rangers Under 14 teams were both on the road for away games on Wednesday evening in the County Leagues. The Blue Team travelled to Lewis Road to face Dr Crokes in Division 1, while the Development (White) Team played St Michaels/Foilmore in Foilmore in Division 9.
Division One:- Dr Crokes 2-8, Laune Rangers 0-11
A first minute goal for Dr Crokes gave the home side the perfect start on Wednesday evening, and they went on to register two points before Callum Moriarty registered Laune Rangers’ first point in the 13th minute. Rangers were much stronger in the second part of the half and outscored Crokes by 3 points to 1, with Callum Russell, Gearoid Hassett (free) & Cian Naylor (free) notching the scores. Half Time score: Dr Crokes 1-4, Laune Rangers 0-4.
The introduction of Mikey O’Donnell and Eoin Hassett at the break injected fresh impetus into the attack. Eoin Hassett teamed up with his brother Gearoid to score 5 points between them – Gearoid with 3 (2 frees) & Eoin with 2 – to give Laune Rangers a two point lead. Crokes scored a point to reduce the gap, before a controversial goal gave the home side the lead – a shot at goal after the whistle had been blown for a free kick went into the net and the goal was allowed. This knocked the stuffing out of Rangers and Crokes added three points to put 4 between the sides. Gearoid Hassett tapped over a free to leave a goal between the sides and, when a substantial penalty claim was turned down, the referee blew the final whistle. Final score: Dr Crokes 2-8, Laune Rangers 0-11.
This was a tough loss for Laune Rangers as their County League chances have now all but gone. Corner backs Matt Reinstierna and Patrick Brennan were strong in their marking assignments while outside them, Sean Cleary & Rory O’Connor put in a big effort. Matt Leslie’s engine at midfield was constantly moving, while in front of them Gearoid Hassett was a constant thorn in the side of Crokes, especially after the introduction of his brother Eoin in the second half.
Laune Rangers: Jake Reinstierna, Patrick Brennan, Shogie O’Sullivan, Matt Reinstierna, Niall Fenton Toms, Rory O’Connor, Sean Cleary, Barry O’Connor, Matthew Leslie (0-1), Callum Moriarty (0-1), Cian Naylor (0-1), Callum Russell (0-1), Darragh Mangan, Gearoid Hassett (0-5), Dean Cahill.
