Under 16s lose in Central League Semi Final

Laune Rangers 2-8, Castleisland Desmonds 4-10

There is an old saying in sport that says “Goals win games” and this was certainly the case in JP O’Sullivan Park on Monday evening in the Central Under 16 League Semi Final between Laune Rangers and Castleisland Desmonds.

The ball hit the crossbar three times in the opening quarter – twice from Desmonds and once from Rangers’ Roan Moriarty. Moriarty’s shot went over the bar and further points from Mark O’Connor and Daragh O’Connor saw Rangers lead by 0-3 to 0-1 after 15 minutes. The first goal went the way of Desmonds to give them the lead for the first time and, after Shane Doona had levelled the game with a free, the Castleisland team netted their second goal in the 20th minute. Desmonds added a point before Laune Rangers were afforded the opportunity to get back into the game before the break with a penalty for a defensive leg block. Roan Moriarty made no mistake and put the ball to the ‘keepers left to leave his side trailing by the minimum as the sides went for the dressing room. The Half Time Score:- Laune Rangers 1-4, Castleisland Desmonds 2-2.

Having shaded the game in the possession stakes in the first half & unlucky to have conceded the first two goals, Laune Rangers were under more pressure in the second half & struggled to get the ball out of their half at times. They got off to the worst possible start to the half when Desmonds scored two goals and a point before Rangers could manage to get on the scoreboard again with points from Shane Doona (2) and Mark O’Connor. Two more points (both frees) followed for Desmonds before Dáire Cleary scored an excellent goal for the home side – Eoin Evans won the ball and fed Daragh O’Connor, who found Cleary with a great pass and the forward made no mistake with the finish. With 15 minutes to play, Desmonds still had a commanding lead of 4-5 to 2-7.

Desmonds managed to hold off any possible comeback, and added 5 points of their own in the final quarter to secure victory. Laune Rangers for their part added a Shane Doona free and a late goal from Daragh O’Connor. Final score: Laune Rangers 2-8, Castleisland Desmonds 4-10.
