Injured O'Mahony leads Rathmore to glory
County star Aidan O'Mahony inspired Rathmore to their first Kerry senior football club title at Fitzgerald Stadium yesterday, despite suffering a suspected broken bone in his left leg early in the game.
Laune Rangers 0-10
A hobbling O'Mahony refused to leave the fray and instead moved from midfield to full forward, from where he scored two points, before eventually being replaced by Paul Reen with eight minutes to go. At that stage, the sides were level on 0-10 apiece and Rathmore pushed on to secure an historic victory courtesy of wing forward Mark Reen's third point in the closing stages.
Rathmore manager Denis Moynihan revealed afterwards how O'Mahony had refused to come off at half-time.
"We should have taken him off earlier. But he didn't want to come off. The physio felt that he wouldn't last the game. Aidan spoke about that at half-time, that even on one leg he would give it everything. That will tell you what it means to Aidan, and all the players," he said.
Rathmore, who led by 0-7 to 0-5 at half-time before falling 0-8 to 0-10 in arrears midway through the second half after Mike Frank Russell, Seamie Foley and Pa Sheehan had pointed for Laune, could yet represent Kerry in the Munster club SFC if Mid Kerry beat reigning champions Dr Crokes in the Kerry SFC final in Killarney next Sunday.
