County Championship – Round 2 – Laune Rangers vs Kenmare

Laune Rangers hosted Kenmare for this Round 2 encounter on Saturday evening. Rangers had the upper hand for the most of this game but it was a nervous final few minutes as Kenmare piled on the pressure, however Rangers held their nerve and will go on to round 3 of the County Championship as a result of this win.
Laune Rangers opened the scoring with a free straight from the throw-in which was converted by Mike Frank Russell. Kenmare answered with a point of their own soon after from the boot of D.J. Brennan (free). Another Mike Frank Russell free in the 4th minute put Rangers ahead once more. Russell increased his tally in the 9th minute with another pointed free to leave the score 0-03 to 0-01 in the home sides favour. Russell further extended Rangers lead in the 11th minute with another converted free. Russell was again on hand mid-way through the half to send another Laune Rangers free over the bar to give the Laune-siders a 0-05 to 0-01 advantage. Good work from Mike Frank and Kieran Doona saw Shane McSweeney add his name to the scoresheet in the 16th minute to further extend Rangers lead. Kenmare replied with a point in the 19th minute, D.J. Brennan made no mistake in slotting the ball over the bar for his second of the evening. Mike Tim O’Sullivan added Kenmare’s third shortly after when he converted a free to leave the score 0-06 to 0-03 with 10 minutes to play in the half. A short kick from Rangers goalkeeper Tony Lyons was intercepted by Kenmare. A Kenmare player was subsequently fouled and a free was awarded. O’Sullivan converted his second point narrowing Rangers lead once more. Mike Frank answered for the home side with another converted free in the 23rd minute. A lovely cross field ball from Colin O’Dwyer to Shane McSweeney saw Sweeney slot over his second of the evening to push Rangers lead back out to 4 points. Kenmare finished the half strong with points from corner forward, Alan O’Leary and another Mike Tim O’Sullivan effort to leave the score 0-08 to 0-06 in Laune Rangers favour at the short whistle.
Kenmare were first out of the traps in the second half with a pointed free from Mike Tim O’Sullivan leaving the narrowest of margins between the sides. Seamie Foley answered for the lads from the Laune with his first of the evening in the 3rd minute of the half. A Geoffrey Mahony sideline kick was well taken by Kieran Doona in the 4th minute with Doona adding his name to the scoresheet. Mike Frank Russell extended Rangers lead soon after with another free to leave the score 0-011 to 0-07. Doona registered his second in the 7th minute when he was on the receiving end of a good Maurice Foley pass. Rangers had a 6 point advantage with 9 minutes of the second half played when Russell pointed further increased his tally. Colm Brosnan got one back for the visitors in the 10th minute but Russell cancelled this out in the 13th minute with another converted free to leave the score 0-14 to 0-08 in Rangers favour. Kenmare’s Mike Tim O’Sullivan and Rangers Seamie Foley swapped points in the minutes that followed leaving Rangers with a 6 point advantage going into the final 10 minutes. A Kenmare free saw that lead narrowed some what as Mike Tim O’Sullivan converted in front of goal. Both sides registered wides in the closing minutes. Another Kenmare free in the 24th minute was again converted by O’Sullivan closing Rangers lead to 4 points. O’Sullivan scored the final point of the evening from a free leaving the score 0-15 to 0-12 in Laune Rangers favour at the final whistle.
