An injury plagued Laune Rangers welcomed Legion to Killorglin on Saturday evening for this Div.1 encounter. The Mid-Kerry team were tipped to take the points but Legion made sure this wasn’t going to be the case!
Legion were first to put a score on the scoreboard with a point from Jonathan Lyne in the 3rd minute of play. Legion had a chance of a goal in the early stages when a sideline kick was put into the box and fell nicely to Padraig Lucey, Lucey had the goals infront to him but somehow managed to send his resulting shot wide when it would have been easier to score! James O’Donoghue added Legion’s second of the evening in the 9th minute before Mike Frank Russell got the home side’s first score after converting a free kick. Russell was again on hand when Laune Rangers were awarded a penalty in the 13th minute of play. The resulting goal put Rangers in the lead, 1-01 to 0-02. Both sides swapped points in the minutes that followed with James O’Donoghue adding to his tally for the visitors and a Colm O’Shea effort mid way through the half. A Pa Joy point for the launesiders left the goal between the sides with just over 10 minutes to play in the half. Legion’s Tom Moriarty levelled the game when a massive high ball from James O’Donoghue was sent into the box, Moriarty made no mistake and raised the green flag. Another Legion point soon after put the visitors one ahead, 1-03 to 1-04. In the 22nd minute of play, Rangers’ corner forward, Jack O’Connor, was denied by the upright but Tom McGillycuddy slotted over the resulting rebound to level the game once more. Laune Rangers finished the half strong with points from Mike Frank Russell(2 frees) & Jack O’Connor punishing Legion whos tally of wides was increasing. Half-time score: 1-07 to 1-04 in the home side’s favour.
Pa Joy pointed from the throw in to give Laune Rangers a four point cushion however this lead was soon demolished when Legion upped a gear. Points from James O’Donoghue(free), Derek Pyne & Mike Sullivan (free) in quick succession left just the narrowest of margins between the teams. Good work from the visitors saw Tom Moriarty in for Legion’s and his second of the day and he made no mistake in finding the back of the Laune Rangers net in the 8th minute of play to put the score 1-08 to 2-07 in Legion’s favour. Derek Pyne and Mike Frank Russell(free) swapped points soon after with Colm O’Shea increading his tally mid-way through the half. Laune Rangers did not score anymore in the game and Legion completely took control at this stage. A Kieran Slattery effort was quickly followed by a well worked Padraig Lucey point to let the goal between the sides. Legion continued to run at Laune Rangers and James O’Donoghue further extended their lead with a point with 10 minutes left on the clock. Tom Moriarty registered his hat-trick in the 23rd minute when James O’Donoghue sent a ball across the Laune Rangers box, Seán Keane passed off to Moriarty who palmed the ball into the Ranger’s net. Legion were cruising at this stage and made everything look easy, final points from Mike O’Sullivan, Padriag Lucey and substitute Jerry ?, gave Legion a deserved win. Final score: 1-10 to 3-14.
